Just as every casino faces unique issues and negotiates a unique contract, every casino also has a unique organizing campaign. Below are flyers the TWU created for the Wynn Dealers' organizing campaign April - May 2007.

The Wynn Dealers established a strong organizing foundation. We were in constant communication via word-of-mouth, email, and this webpage. Below are some examples of our communications:
TRUST STEVE? Read this testimonial:
As you all know, Stevie has had some meetings trying to discourage us from voting for union representation. As we all expected, he was his old charismatic charming self. And, as we all expected, he said that he was sorry and that he knew he’d made a mistake. He hung his head low and sounded very sincere just like Garrity told him to. It was all there – the body language and tone of voice. Legally Wynn cannot guarantee us anything, but rumors insinuate a ‘no’ vote will give us our tokes back. Of course it is all an act. I hope everyone can see through it.
I want to remind everyone that despite what Steve Wynn said today, we must still stand strong and united. I know that many of us want to be able to trust him but unfortunately with his track record, we can’t.
When Bellagio opened, he told all of the dealers at the Mirage that they would be able to transfer. Of course as everyone knows, that did not happen. They conducted a lottery to see who would be able to go and many of Steve’s loyal employees who had worked for him for years were denied that chance. He then hired people fresh out of dealers’ school to fill those positions.
When Steve Wynn bought the Desert Inn, he told the employees they had nothing to worry about; they would continue to have jobs. Unfortunately, not even two weeks later, he notified them that they would have three months to find another job because he was closing the DI. To add insult to injury, he then came back one week later and told those same people that he was only required by law to notify them six weeks in advance, so the property would close in six weeks instead.
Steve Wynn says that he didn’t know how bad our situation was because he was too busy in Macau. We can’t believe that for a second. With all the fighting Wynn Las Vegas has done to kill AB 357, AB 248, and their knowledge of our continuing effort to unionize, he can’t tell me that he didn’t know. How could he not know about something that has been in the newspapers and on TV so many times? How could he not know about something that has been so public? How could he not know there were multiple lawsuits filed against him? How could he not know that his wife was in Carson City lobbying against our bill as he stood in front of the dealers giving his sorrow speech?
Steve says that he’s not angry at us. Just eight months ago, he told us how worthless we were and that we were muggers and thieves. Then in a meeting he threatened to fire everyone if we went union. He said our tip money was his property and he could do whatever he wanted with it. What’s changed? Why is he suddenly not angry at us?
He says he’s not going to fire us or retaliate against us after this is over. Why has he hired almost 400 extra board dealers? The extra board dealers weren’t getting very many working days as it was and he continues to hire more. Why? He can’t fire us or lay us off if we vote for the union but if we vote against it, he can do whatever he wants. Maybe he will make us reapply for our jobs under a different job title. Who would stop him? The Labor Commissioner? The courts? The politicians? No one has stopped him from doing anything up to this point.
Remember how excited we were to work for Wynn when we first opened? He told us he hoped we would carry out our money in wheel barrels. He told us we would have the best food and the best working conditions. Yet to this day, he has taken and is still taking our money and those promises go unfulfilled. Remember how betrayed and let down we all felt when he told us he was going to take our money to give it to the floor supervisors? Remember the $1,500 ($2,000?) bonuses we’re supposed to receive every three months? We’ve received one in eight months!
I wish I could trust Steve Wynn. It would make things so much easier for all of us but I’m not going to take that chance. He’s lied too many times in the past for me to suddenly trust him now. Too much is at stake if we back down. Our organizing committee has worked hard to get us where we are. The TWU has spent a lot of time and money to get us to where we are and as far as I’m concerned, the only people who have our best interests in mind are the dealers themselves and we need to stand united. If we don’t now, we will not get another chance and Steve Wynn and his lawyers all know that. We will be shooting ourselves in the foot with the bullet that Steve Wynn provided.
You have a strong, experienced committee looking out for you. We are not going to be taken for a ride. Every dealer who wishes to will have a say in our contract negotiation. Once the contract is reached, we will all vote to pass it. Many people think that Steve Wynn will not give us our money back. Now he says he’s “sorry” and he wants to make things better. I have an idea. Why not make him put that in writing? If he really cares about us, he will make things better and not just with empty promises but with his signature on OUR contract.
I hope you will vote yes and let your organizing committee work for you to make things better. That’s what we all want and that’s what we all deserve.
We need everyone to vote and I hope everyone will vote YES!!! Not voting does not mean that you are voting for the union like Steve Wynn said. Please make your voice heard.
We are having a party after the votes are counted on Sunday morning at 4am at Tommy Rockers. I hope it will be a victory party and I hope to see everyone there!!!
Thank you everyone for all your hard work!

Robots
The robot standing at the gaming table really made me stop, look, and read. When you look around today, where we shop for groceries, or essentials we need what do you see? Self-check machines. If you have flown lately, what do you see? Self-ticketing machines. The key word here is machines. The more we use these in the public the more they are approved to take over good paying human jobs and management continues to reap the benefits off of "cheap" labor. The robot can't complain about poor conditions.
Stand together and vote for the security of your future. Vote Yes for TWU!
From Assemblyman Bob Beers
Do not believe a word Wynn said in the meeting. If you do not vote for the union, every one who even seemed to support it will be fired, and those who complained about losing 20% of their tokes will be out the door as well. The union is the only weapon you have in this fight. If he was so sorry, why has not everyone he fired been brought back? Why has he not begun to replace all the money taken from you? Empty promises from an empty soul. Trust me, I have not stood up for you because it is good for my checkbook. I've stood up for you because it was the right thing to do. Vote yes this weekend and make me proud. |
